Palmetto Percussion is proud to announce their 2010 Program, "The Butterfly Effect".

The Butterfly Effect is a term in Chaos Theory in which small variations in initial conditions of a non-linear dynamic system can produce large variations in the long-term behavior of the system. The term "Butterfly Effect" is related to the work of mathematician Edward Lorenz. Lorenz, attempting to apply mathematical modeling to meteorological phenomena and weather prediction, discovered that apparently small changes in initial conditions produced large changes in the long-term outcome. These variations in initial conditions could be so numerous and so slight that they made accurate prediction of future effects impossible. It was then asked, "Does the flap of a butterfly's wings in Brazil set off a tornado in Texas?" In the fourth season of Palmetto Percussion, we will explore what may happen when subtle changes are made to a visual and/or musical idea that could lead to drastic differences and unpredictable outcomes from the original motif.
